Our Journey

What began as an ambitious vision is now a transformative reality. In July 2025, TMU’s School of Medicine officially opened its doors in Brampton—first welcoming residents to our Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) programs, followed by the inaugural cohort of MD students in September. The timeline below captures the key milestones that have defined our journey and helped shape Canada’s newest medical school.

July 2021 City of Brampton Committee of Council unanimously votes in support of the TMU School of Medicine, awarding TMU a planning grant
March 2022 Government of Ontario confirms its support for TMU School of Medicine
October 2022 School of Medicine signs an affiliation agreement with William Osler Health System (WOHS) as its primary clinical partner
January 2023 City of Brampton donates the former Bramalea Civic Centre as the future home of the School of Medicine, along with $20 million to support its transformation
March 2023 TMU Senate approves the establishment of the School of Medicine
May 2023 TMU Senate approves the Doctor of Medicine program
July 2023 Dr. Teresa M. Chan is appointed the Founding Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice-President, Medical Affairs
April 2024 Diamond Schmitt is selected as the primary consultant to design and plan Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) new School of Medicine.
September 2024 The Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) grants the School of Medicine preliminary accreditation for its MD program, making it the 18th accredited medical school in Canada
October 2024 School of Medicine earns national medical colleges accreditation of 16 new residency programs through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada
November 2024 Moez and Marissa Kassam make a landmark $5-million investment in equity at TMU School of Medicine, funding scholarships for students from underrepresented communities and naming the School’s central atrium
March 2025 School of Medicine’s first R-1 Match Day—the day when thousands of graduating medical students learn if they have been matched with a residency program. TMU was the only medical school in Canada to fill all residency program R-1 positions
May 2025 First-ever admission offers go out to stand-out applicants for the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program
May 2025 Government of Ontario announces funding for two primary care teaching clinics at TMU, as part of a $213 million investment to expand and strengthen access to family health care across the province
July 2025 School of Medicine officially launches its Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) programs and over 100 residents begin their training
July 2025 Bikram Dhillon, CEO of BVD Group, and his family make a transformational donation to support the establishment of the university’s new Medical Library along with two new student awards
September 2025 TMU officially opens the doors to its new School of Medicine in Brampton, welcoming its first cohort of 94 MD students
