Toronto Metropolitan University’s Innovation Boost Zone Awarded $430,000 from IPON to Strengthen Ontario’s Commercialization Outcomes
TORONTO, April 13, 2026 — The Innovation Boost Zone (IBZ) (external link, opens in new window) at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is proud to announce it has been selected by Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) (external link, opens in new window) to deliver a new immersive Innovation Fellowship program to strengthen commercialization outcomes for research in Ontario. The IBZ Innovation Fellowship Powered by IPON (external link, opens in new window) leverages TMU's position as one of Canada's most entrepreneurial universities. The program will empower 30 Fellows from across Ontario to build the skills and experience to commercialize a research-driven innovation, process or invention.
By adopting a proven "Inventor-Centric" model, the program addresses the critical "Valleys of Death" in commercialization—Technology, Market, IP, and Execution risks. With IPON's investment, the IBZ will mobilize the renowned Zone Learning ecosystem at TMU, leadership in the national Lab2Market Network, a comprehensive curriculum, and more than 80 mentors and subject-matter experts to ensure that Ontario's research excellence translates into tangible economic and social gains.
The IPON Innovation Fellowship fills a critical gap by offering a structured, stipend-backed program that equips student co-inventors with IP strategy, mentorship, and operational support needed to bring university research to market.
"In an increasingly interconnected world, the challenges and opportunities we face demand bold and creative solutions. This partnership with IPON strengthens our ability to move research from innovative concepts to impactful products and services in the market, equipping the next generation of deep-tech founders with the IP literacy and operational resources they need to compete globally—and ensuring the economic benefits of made-in-Ontario innovation stay right here in our province."
Launching this summer, the IBZ Innovation Fellowship consists of four programming streams designed to support student researchers at every stage of the journey—from initial market discovery to fundraising and global scaling. Upon admission, Fellows are triaged into one of four streams based on their Technology Readiness Level: Market Discovery, Market Validation, Product Development, and Go-to-Market & Fundraising.
Every Fellow, regardless of their stream, will benefit from a specialized Incubation Support Program that includes:
- IP-First & Just-in-Time Learning: Mandatory completion of IPON's specialized virtual IP modules, complemented by a blend of live workshops and asynchronous learning.
- Operational Excellence: Access to the IBZ's incubator, co-working space, and makerspaces at TMU, providing dedicated support for life sciences, chemistry, microelectronics, and fabrication.
- Agile Mentorship: Weekly scrums, access to seasoned entrepreneurs and mentors, and progress tracking to solve technical and business bottlenecks in real-time.
"Ontario is home to the largest concentration of research universities in Canada, producing world-class discoveries across every sector. This fellowship surrounds students, postdocs, and faculty —the co-inventors who are hungry to make an impact—with the mentorship, IP strategy, and operational support they need to connect their research to the private sector and communities that stand to benefit most."
The program will culminate in a Demo Day pitch competition before private-sector and deep-tech investors, providing Fellows with direct feedback, potential seed funding, and partnership opportunities.
This partnership between the TMU and IPON represents a critical investment in Ontario's innovation sovereignty. By embedding IP strategy into the earliest stages of the research-to-market pipeline, the IBZ at TMU is ensuring that Ontario's deep-tech entrepreneurs are ready to compete and win on a global stage.
