Why I picked TMU and what made it home

Hi there, I'm Jasmine, your student ambassador.

This fall looks a little different for me, especially since I’m starting my fourth year in the Journalism program here at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on what’s brought me to this point.

I picked the Journalism program because I loved writing and I loved how practical the program was, allowing me to work within realistic editorial deadlines and use industry-standard radio and broadcast equipment. I chose TMU specifically, though because of the diversity, the community and the city.

Coming to TMU was scary, but my time here has given me more than I could've ever imagined. The city has lived up to my expectations (I mean, just look at that view). I moved into my dorm, became friends with my roommate, and the rest is history. Picking TMU was not only the best decision for me academically, but it also gave me a community of people from across different programs, in and outside of the classroom.

The extracurriculars the TMU community fosters really made my undergrad experience amazing, and without further ado, here are a few things that I was able to do over the past 3 years that made TMU feel like home:

The Eyeopener

Although it was intimidating, I dove into the world of student journalism almost immediately in my first year, writing for The Eyeopener, TMU’s independent student paper. I later transitioned into an editor position in my second and third years. The Eye not only pushed me to try new things, but also helped me grow my confidence in my field and gave me the best community I could have ever asked for with lifelong friends.

The Journalism Course Union

I also got involved in the Journalism Course Union for 2 years, wrapping up my term as president this past April. The union gave me the chance to build connections with other students and also the incredible faculty at The Creative School. I had the opportunity to build leadership skills while also representing the study body. The entire experience gave me an incredible sense of fulfilment.

Career Boost

And, this past summer I got the chance to work as your student ambassador through the Career Boost program. The Career Boost program at TMU offers students an opportunity to work for the university and to gain experience while we study in our respective programs. From working for a faculty to the recreation service units on campus, Career Boost has a wide range of paid positions available all year round.

For me, the program gave me some professional experience, and a way to cover the high costs of being a student in Toronto. Some of my biggest takeaways from my Career Boost position include working in a collaborative environment, writing for different audiences and accessing unique developmental resources and training.

Anyway, I can't wait to spend the year with all of you. Keep an eye out for more blogs about student life, my experiences and resources that can help you better navigate TMU. You can also sign up for TMU emails to receive updates from me and the university!

Back in a bit,

Jasmine, your student ambassador
