Hey, it’s Ido, fourth-year Image Arts: Film student and your Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) student ambassador. Making any decision regarding university can feel complicated. You want to have as much information as possible about student life, your prospective program(s), supports, residence options and more. While there’s a lot of information available online, there’s no substitute for experiencing our campus at Choose TMU: Open House. This event is designed to give you all the information you need to understand the options in front of you. You can learn more about the faculty or faculties you’ve applied to, attend sample lectures from different programs, tour campus buildings, chat with current TMU students and much more.

Social Work student, Audrika.

I spoke with Audrika, a third-year Social Work student who attended this event before enrolling at TMU. Through TMU’s student employment program (Career Boost), Audrika now works for Student Recruitment and gets to welcome students during the Open House event.

I asked Audrika a few questions about what she remembers about her experience at Choose TMU: Open House. She also shared what she enjoys about working at the event now!

Why should students attend Choose TMU: Open House?

Audrika: Prospective students get a fantastic opportunity to tour the campus in person at Choose TMU: Open House. It allows them to explore many of our buildings, learn even more about the different programs they may have applied for, and have direct conversations with staff, professors and current students. Students are also able to gain a better understanding of the environment, student life and other supports. Additionally, attending the event is a fantastic way to see campus life and determine whether the university community is a good fit for you.

What was your experience attending Choose TMU: Open House as a high school student?

A: When I attended, I explored the campus, attended program sessions about Social Work and spoke with students and professors. I was able to ask questions about the program, student life and campus resources. Additionally, it made the transition from high school to university seem more manageable and helped me imagine what my everyday life might be like as a university student.

How did it influence your decision to enrol at TMU?

A: I was able to learn more about the Social Work program, which was a significant factor in choosing TMU. I was certain that TMU would be a helpful place for my academic and personal development after visiting the campus, learning about the program and hearing about student experiences.

What do you enjoy now about working the event?

A: Making connections with prospective students and their families is one of my favourite aspects of working at Choose TMU: Open House. Knowing that these conversations might make students feel more at ease and excited about their future endeavours is exciting!

What questions should students ask and what should they be on the lookout for?

A: Students should consider asking about possible co-op placements, extracurricular activities, program expectations and program structure. Asking about supports on campus, such as wellness programs and academic assistance, is also beneficial. When exploring the campus, students should consider whether they can imagine themselves developing, learning and creating a community here at TMU.  Thanks to Audrika for taking the time to chat with me about Choose TMU: Open House. Choosing your university and program is a big decision. It’s very common to have questions as you consider your options. Choose TMU: Open House is the perfect event to really experience campus and to help you reach your decision!

Until next time,
Ido, your student ambassador
