The 5 Best Coffee Shops Near Campus That Aren’t Starbucks or Balzac's

I know it’s a cliché that university students love coffee, but come on, it’s accurate. When walking around campus, it’s easy to visit popular spots like Starbucks in the Student Learning Centre (SLC) (opens in new window)  or Balzac’s on Gould Street. But next time you’re on campus, check out one of these five independent coffee shops to try something new!

Black Bear Espresso's entrance, located on College Street

Located right across from the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) on College Street, Black Bear Espresso was actually the first independent coffee shop I discovered while living in residence. They have a few tables if you want to sit down and study, but if not you can always grab an espresso-based drink to go. They’re also one of the only downtown cafés that serve Toronto-famous Gryfe’s bagels!

Mast Coffee's window displays big block yellow letters that read "But first, coffee."

Mast is a great choice if you’re near Pitman Hall, the Daphne Cockwell Complex (DCC) or the Rogers Communication Centre (RCC). This minimalist coffee shop partners with different local Toronto artists every two months to showcase their work on their cups. Mast is currently serving up fall specials like hot apple cider and a white chocolate macadamia latté that is simply to die for.

The outdoor patio and entrance of Page One Café is in view on Mutual Street

Conveniently located right around the corner from the RCC and Pitman Hall, this gem has a huge indoor space that is perfect for studying alone or meeting up with friends for a group project. The space is filled with dozens of vintage typewriters, and the walls are plastered with inspirational quotes from famous authors. Our students also get 10% off here when they add food to their order!

Dineen Coffee Co is seen from across the street with its umbrella-lined patio

I actually discovered Dineen while working at The Eaton Centre (external link, opens in new window)  in my second year. (Fun fact: lots of students at our university work in The Eaton Centre!) Located less than a ten-minute walk from the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM), this large space serves up great coffee, tea and iced drinks, as well as all of the classic baked goods like croissants and muffins. It usually gets pretty busy here, so if you’re looking to study, be prepared for a crowd!

Neo Coffee Bar's glass windows and entrance are seen along with a few empty tables on the sidewalk

Neo Coffee Bar has been blowing up on TikTok, and for good reason. This Japanese-inspired coffee shop has a gorgeous interior and lots of outdoor seating to grab a coffee and finish up a reading. They’re most famous for their pastries, with seasonal specials like the matcha white chocolate mini pie, and classics like their strawberry shortcake roll cake. Situated at Bay and College, Neo Coffee Bar is right near campus and the perfect spot for a mini escape.
