UGME Committees

TMU banner

The School of Medicine team is currently working towards national accreditation requirements as established by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS), for which documentation is due Aug. 1, 2023. The School of Medicine must fulfill these standards for preliminary accreditation to successfully launch a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program in 2025.

A crucial stage in the CACMS process is the peer review of the proposed School’s documents for submission – known as the Medical School Self Study (external link)  (MSS). This formalized process provides the opportunity for participation of up to six faculty members across TMU, in addition to learners and staff.

In addition to accreditation, the School of Medicine will be launching two key undergraduate medical education (UGME) governance committees to oversee decision making in the program. The committees will comprise members from the School of Medicine team, clinicians, students, community and up to four TMU faculty.

Current faculty opportunities for engaging with the School of Medicine can occur in the following ways:

  • Undergraduate medical education (UGME) committees
  • Medical School Self-Study (MSS) subcommittees

If you would like to be involved, please express interest with the Dean of your faculty and email the School of Medicine team medicine@torontomu.ca

Undergraduate medical education (UGME) committees

UGME Program Council

The (Interim) UGME Program Council - (interim UPC) is the primary program governance body responsible for overseeing all key components of the UGME Program. This includes reviewing, making suggestions on and approving UGME policies and guidelines of governance; curriculum design, implementation and learning environment; faculty preparation; student assessment and outcomes; and, quality improvement and evaluation of the UGME Program. The Council is also responsible for ensuring alignment with meeting national Canadian accreditation and Ontario University accreditation standards across the UGME Program, via CACMS (Committee for Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools) and IQAP (Institutional Quality Assurance Process) respectively.

UGME Admissions Council

The UGME Program Admissions Council (UAC) is responsible for oversight and decisions directing the governance and operations of admission to the UGME Program (Program). The UAC will create, implement and monitor to improve processes and procedures for Program admissions while ensuring alignment with the mission, vision and values of TMU and the TMU School of Medicine. The UAC is accountable to the TMU SoM Faculty Council, or in its absence, the Executive Committee, for all recommendations and will advise/work in collaboration with the UGME Program Council. The UAC is charged with leading all decision-making throughout the Program admissions process and holds final authority for processes and offers in admission to the UGME Program.

Request: For each council, we welcome up to two faculty representatives from Toronto Metropolitan University with each member from different faculties.

Meeting frequency and process:

  • The Councils will meet monthly from April until July 2023 for 1.5 to 2 hours, and bi-monthly thereafter.
  • Additional meetings may be scheduled at the discretion of the Chair and with Council consensus.
  • Meetings will be virtual with an intent to assess a hybrid model over time.

Medical School Self-Study (MSS) subcommittees

The MSS for Preliminary Accreditation Sub Committee plays an important role in the successful completion of the MSS for Preliminary Accreditation process. The subcommittees responsibilities are to review the relevant portions of the Data Collection Instrument (DCI); respond to the questions in the MSS for Preliminary Accreditation documents; comment on anticipated programmatic strengths and challenges; and provide recommend actions to resolve any identified problems. The subcommitttees work to prepare a summary report to submit to the Steering Committee as part of the preliminary accreditation process.

Request: For each of the six MSS subcommittees, we welcome one faculty representative from Toronto Metropolitan University.

Meeting frequency and process:

  • The MSS for Preliminary Accreditation Steering Subcommittees are recommended to meet bi-weekly within the period of April 12 to May 30, 2023.
  • Additional meetings may be scheduled at the discretion of the Chair and with Committee consensus.
