Learner Advisory Committee

As part of Toronto Metropolitan University's (TMU) commitment to build a School of Medicine that is community-driven and intentionally inclusive, our Learner Advisory Committee provides feedback, ideas and recommendations on program development matters for the School of Medicine. 

The advisory committee will be chaired by Dr. Stephanie Milone, Interim Assistant Dean of Learner Affairs, and is open to TMU students from any school or faculty, in addition to medical school students or medical residents across Canada.

Purpose and responsibilities of the Learner Advisory Committee

The advisory committee will advise the Dean’s Council by providing constructive feedback, ideas and recommendations on program development, supporting reciprocal engagement with learners, and providing advice regarding the proposed Doctor of Medicine (MD) program and the development of the School of Medicine.

Committee members will:

  • provide constructive feedback, ideas and recommendations on program development matters;
  • gather feedback and information from learners, as requested by the Committee Chair, on topics related to the School of Medicine;
  • share with learners, including student groups and societies, the work of the Learner Advisory Committee as well as developments of the proposed School of Medicine, as requested by the Chair; and
  • represent the learner body in School of Medicine working groups, if requested by the Chair.

Application information and role expectations

Committee members will be selected via an application process and will serve for a one-year term.

  • You are eligible to apply if you are:
    • a TMU student in any school or faculty, particularly one with an interest in medical education;
    • a current medical school student; or
    • a current medical resident.
  • Applicants will be evaluated based on their answers to three questions assessing your interest in participating in the Committee, what you hope to contribute, and what you hope to learn.
  • We are committed to the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion and want to ensure that the voices of equity-deserving learners are present on the Committee. We also encourage learners with lived experiences to apply. Therefore, we strongly encourage learners to apply who self-identify with any equity-deserving groups, such as Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and those who identify as women and/or 2SLGBTQ+.

Participation on the School of Medicine Learner Advisory Committee is voluntary.

  • Committee meetings: Monthly 1-2 hour meetings.
  • Outside of meetings: Approximately one hour each month for any action items before or after Committee meetings.
  • Length of appointment: April 2024 to April 2025.

All learners will be asked for their name, email, program/year of study, resume/CV and responses to three questions (max. 2000 characters each):

  • What do you hope to learn as a Learner Advisory Committee member?
  • What do you hope to contribute as a Learner Advisory Committee member?

Applications will be accepted between Monday, February 26 to Sunday, March 17.

Participation in the Committee requires that you be available on the dates listed below. All meetings will take place virtually via Zoom.

First Committee Meeting: April 25, 2024, 3:00—5:00 pm

Second Committee Meeting: May 23, 2024, 3:00—5:00 pm

Third Committee Meeting: June 27, 2024, 3:00—5:00 pm
