Student Spotlight: David Medcalfe Wins Two National Awards for Outstanding Interdisciplinary Research

🎓 FRQNT Master’s Research Scholarship

In April 2025, RAI student David Medcalfe was awarded the prestigious Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) Master’s Research Scholarship for the 2025–2026 academic year. This highly competitive fellowship is one of Quebec’s most esteemed research awards in science and technology and is typically awarded to students in core STEM disciplines.

David’s selection is a notable recognition of his interdisciplinary research, which bridges technical, legal, and ethical domains to address challenges in responsible AI governance. His work, supervised by Professor Benjamin Fung (Canada Research Chair in Data Mining for Cybersecurity), focuses on protecting critical infrastructure from vulnerabilities posed by emerging AI systems through robust cybersecurity and regulatory frameworks.
