How AI is Introducing Errors into Courtrooms
June 26, 2025
The MIT Technology Review recently published a thought-provoking piece on how AI is making its way into the courtroom—and not always for the better. Titled “How AI Is Introducing Errors into Courtrooms”, the article highlights rising concerns over “hallucinated” legal citations and evidence generated by AI tools that appear authoritative but are factually incorrect.
Among the voices featured is Dr. Maura Grossman, Principal Investigator in our research group, who emphasizes that hallucinations “don’t seem to have slowed down. If anything, they’ve sped up.”
Her insight highlights a growing tension: the legal system demands accuracy, yet AI tools remain prone to misleading, and even fabricated, information.
