NEW CHAIR AND UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR
NEW CHAIR AND UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR
TMU’s Department of History is pleased to welcome a new leadership team, beginning July 2023.
Our new Chair is Dr. Jean Li. She joined the department in 2013 after completing her PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research and teaching focuses on Ancient Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which art and archaeology help us understand material constructions of identity, gender, and the roles and status of women. Dr. Li has an impressive record of service to the Department of History and to the wider university, including her work as Undergraduate Program Director and as a member of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Studies Centre.
Dr. Jennifer Hubbard takes over as Undergraduate Program Director from Dr. Li. She joined our department in 1997 after earning a PhD from the University of Toronto. Her expertise lies in the History of Science, with a focus on the history of North American fisheries and marine science. She brings to this position a wealth of experience about TMU and the department, including serving a previous term as Undergraduate Program Director.
We also would like to thank our departing Interim Chair, Dr. Melanie Knight, whom we borrowed from the Department of Sociology for the past year. Dr. Knight served us with consummate skill, grace, and wit, and we are most grateful that she took on the difficult position of helming a department that was not her own. Of particular note was Dr. Knight’s guidance as we conducted a thorough review of our curriculum, along with her mentorship of newer members of our department.
