SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TMU HISTORY STUDENTS TO STUDY IN BERLIN THIS SUMMER
For the past five years, the Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) has awarded TMU History students scholarships for a semester of study in Berlin. FUBiS provides generous 3,500 Euro (approximately $4,900 Canadian) scholarships for Term II of the program, which in 2023 runs from 3 June to 15 July. These funds cover tuition, accommodation, insurance, flights from Toronto to Berlin, and a day trip to Potsdam.
Scholarship winners can choose a German language course – with several sections offered to accommodate students of all abilities, from beginner to advanced – or a Humanities course. These typically include classes in German and European history, European art, and the political and economic dimensions of the European Union. All Humanities courses include excursions to museums, cultural and political institutions, and historic sites, with entrance fees covered by Freie Universität. Scholarship students can apply the credits they earn to their TMU degree.
Qualified scholarship applicants must be enrolled as full-time students and have a strong academic record. In adjudicating the scholarship competition, the selection committee considers past academic performance as well as the applicant’s statement about why they wish to study in Berlin and how the course they propose to take fits into their wider academic and career plans.
Applications for the FUBiS scholarship will be due in February; an email describing the application process and the specific application deadline will be sent early in the winter term. And non-scholarship TMU students can choose to study abroad at FUBiS during any of the program’s three annual semesters. For more on the program, visit fubis.org/index.html.
