December 2025

The founding GPD of the Data Science and Analytics MSc program, Dr. Ayse Basar, is stepping down at the end of this year. After retiring from TMU as a professor emerita, she will become the president of Kadir Has University in Istanbul, Turkey.

December 2025

2025 Data Science and Analytics alumnus Mohamed Al, co-authored a paper with his supervisor Alan Fung, based on his MRP. (Mohamed Ali, Alan Fung and Ceni Babaoglu, Toronto Metropolitan University, “Interpretable Ensemble Learning for Breast Cancer Diagnosis: Performance, SHAP Explanations, and Clinical Alignment”). The paper was accepted for oral presentation and publication in the Springer LNNS series at the 11th International Congress on Information and Communication Technology (ICICT 2026) in London.

2025 Data Science and Analytics alumni Aadarsha Chapagain and Ziying (Jenny) Huang co-authored papers with their MRP supervisor Ozgur Turetken, based on their MRPs, Machine Learning for Money Laundering Detection (Chapagain and Turetken) and Mitigating Algorithmic Bias in Fraud Detection (Huang and Turetken). The papers were presented at 2025 Pre-ICIS SIGDSA Symposium that was held in December 2025 in Nashville, USA.

Congratulations to 2023-24 MSc in Data Science and Analytics students, Sameer Ladha, Vaidehi Atodaria, Ricky Yu and Pavleen Brar whose work with their MRP supervisor Anatoliy Gruzd has been recently highlighted in the article Inside the Social Media Lab’s Bridging Divides Studies on Online Migration Discourses.

The paper was presented at ICCISIT conference 2019 (International Conference on Computer Information Systems and Information Technology) in Istanbul, Turkey.

2018 Data Science and Analytics alumna Ghazala Khan co-authored a paper with her MRP supervisor Naimul Khan, Brain MRI Segmentation using efficient 3D Fully Convolutional Neural Networks. The paper was presented at IEEE international Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine 2018 in Madrid, Spain.
