Areas of ExpertiseAdvanced Practice Nursing (Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist) Education, Research & Practice; Health Services & Policy Research; Primary Care; Long-Term Care; Quality Improvement; Mixed Methods Research

Originally a graduate of a two-year nursing program, I later obtained my baccalaureate degree, and then several years later, my master's degree in nursing.  As a registered nurse, I worked in many specialty areas of hospitals and as a nurse educator, then as an entrepreneur for 10 years, consulting with hospitals and long-term care. In 2000, I graduated from the Ontario Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program, followed a few years later by a Ph.D from McMaster University. A life-long learner, I also completed a Graduate Diploma in Health Services and Policy Research and a two-year Postdoctoral Award that focused on the integration of nurse practitioners (NPs) in long-term care settings across Canada. I have taught in the nursing program at Toronto Metropolitan University since 1990.

In addition to my faculty role at Toronto Metropolitan University, I am an Affiliate Faculty member with the Canadian Centre for Advanced Practice Nursing Research, housed at McMaster University. My research interests primarily focus on advanced practice nursing (NPs and clinical nurse specialists) in primary and long-term care, NP education, and health services and policy research. I was appointed by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) to the Research Advisory Council to develop national competencies for entry-level NPs and selected to serve on the Ontario NP Practice Standard Revision Advisory Group for the CNO. I served two terms as a Director on the Board of Health Quality Ontario and two terms on the Board of Directors for Central West Specialized Developmental Services, where I chaired the Quality Improvement Committee.
