Sin Yee Koh

Sin Yee Koh is Senior Assistant Professor in Asian Migration, Mobility and Diaspora at the Institute of Asian Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam; and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. She is a human geographer with expertise in migration studies (education, skilled, lifestyle, transnational mobilities, migration industry) and urban studies (urbanisation and social change in Asia, urban intermediaries). Her work uses the lens of migration and mobility to understand the circulations of people, capital, and aspirations in and through cities. Informed by postcolonial geography, her work seeks to understand the causes, processes, and consequences of structural and urban inequalities, and how people cope individually and collectively under such conditions. She has published on migration and colonial legacies, race and citizenship, diaspora strategies, academic and teacher expatriate mobilities, migration and urban intermediaries, lifestyle migration-led urban speculation, cities and the super-rich, and the globalisation of real estate. Her books on migration and mobilities include: Race, Education and Citizenship: Mobile Malaysians, British Colonial Legacies, and a Culture of Migration (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017); and New Chinese Migrations: Mobility, Home, and Inspirations (edited with Y. W. Chan, Routledge, 2018). She is editorial board member of Global Networks (2022–), Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers (2022–), Transitions: Journal of Transient Migration (2018–), and a member of the City Collective for City: Analysis of Urban Change, Theory, Action (2020–).
