Astou Thiam

Astou Thiam is currently undertaking a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences under the supervision of Suzanne Huot. Her doctoral research will examine the complex flows and multiple drivers of global migration to Canada. This critical, qualitative research study will examine the role of language in shaping participants’ experiences of migration.  

Astou Thiam has a Master's in Epidemiology from Laval University (Quebec) and has been working for over 10 years as a scientific research consultant, research associate or public health lead across Canada. Astou’s Bachelor's degree was in Medicine, obtained in Senegal with clinical internships carried out in France. In addition, she has experience in governance, financial literacy and leadership. She is the former president of La Boussole, a francophone community centre in downtown Vancouver. Astou sat on the Canadian Heritage recommendation table from 2019 to 2021 and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the British Columbia Public Health Association and Co-Chair of Capacity Building since November 2021.
