Case Competition Rules

  1. Each team will be comprised of no more than 4 students.
  2. The case will be released to all team members via email by 6 p.m. on February 22, 2024.
  3. Each team is permitted and encouraged to have a faculty/industry case coach.
  4. The case coach is permitted and encouraged to attend the competition.
  5. Teams must prepare a solution to the case that incorporates the information found in the case and addresses the questions at the end of the case, as the teams see fit.
  6. Teams are not permitted to identify their school in their presentations but are permitted to give their team a neutral name.
  7. In presenting their solution, teams must prepare a slide deck for a maximum 20-minute presentation and a one (1) page single sided executive summary of their presentation.
  8. Teams must email their presentation and executive summary no later than 6 p.m. on February 29, 2024 to the case competition organizer: gmacsweeney@torontomu.ca (opens in new window)
  9. Teams must print 12 copies of their executive summary and submit them to the competition organizer on Friday, March 1, 2024 at the 4:15 p.m. Competition Q&A.
  10. Teams will present in their determined order to a panel of judges for a maximum of 20 minutes, followed by a maximum of 10 minutes of question and answer from the judges only. No questions from the room are permitted.
  11. Teams are permitted to introduce themselves to the judges only by way of their neutral team name and may set out the role relationship for presentation between themselves and the judges as they see fit. For instance, teams my take on the role of advisor(s) and assign to the judges the role of an identified individual or the board, as it makes sense for their presentation.
  12. Students are not permitted to present any supplementary material to the judges.
  13. There will be two rounds of presentations in two rooms. Schools with two teams will be separated into the two rooms. The order of presentations will be determined by luck of the draw at the competition Q&A session on Friday, March 1, 2024.
  14. Teams are not permitted to observe in the first round, but coaches may if they wish.
  15. Judges will have a case score card and will only be given a copy of the executive summary by the room host at the judges breakout, following each presentation.
  16. The judges will have a neutral guide in each room. The role of the guide is to answer procedural questions for the judges. Guides are not permitted to ask questions of the teams or give their thoughts or impressions of the presentations to the judges.
  17. All observers must exit the room between presentations. Only the room host/timekeeper, and the judges guide will be permitted to stay in the room.
  18. The top team determined by the judges from each room will move forward to the second round. The two panels of judges with their guides will then meet to determine which team will take the third place in the second round. The judges will use their score cards, the provided executive summaries, and slide decks to determine the third finalist.
  19. A new panel of judges will convene for the second round, where the top three teams will compete, and the same deliberation process will be repeated.
  20. Teams are not permitted to change their slide deck for the final round.
  21. Attendance at the final round will be open to all students who are not competing.
