Facilities Management and Development (“Facilities”) is upgrading the existing fire alarm system in Kerr Hall and the Recreation and Athletics Centre (RAC) with a new network data system, control centre and devices. The work will include installing new cables, devices and electrical panels, then decommissioning and removing the existing system. Testing of the signals when the upgrade is complete.

The work is set to begin February 2021 and will take place overnight, Mondays through Thursdays, until December 2022.

Electrical contractors will begin by installing networking cables through conduit throughout Kerr Hall, including the Recreation and Athletics Centre. Some new conduits may need to be added through walls in some locations.

How this may impact you

Ryerson University has shifted to an essential-services model on our campus in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Employees are asked not to come to campus unless absolutely necessary. Employees with OneCard access who must enter Kerr Hall of the RAC to conduct essential tasks may encounter workers in the building, however most of the work will occur overnight.

Electrical contractors may be required to enter some office spaces overnight to install and remove cabling and replace devices.

In cases where new conduit must be installed, the work may create some dust and debris. The electrical crew will make every effort to minimize the negative impact of their work and will ensure that furniture and equipment is protected from dust.
