CERC Migration unveils Under the Tent

A creative exploration of multiculturalism

On Canada Day long weekend, CERC Migration unveiled its creative research project Under the Tent at the Aga Khan Museum. The program coincides with 50-years of Canadian multiculturalism policy and Canada Day celebrations.

Under the Tent (external link, opens in new window)  is a multimedia storytelling project that unpacks multiculturalism through 18 multidisciplinary works produced by graduate students from across Canada. The creative works explore Canadian multiculturalism, not as a destination but as a journey towards many destinations. The audience was invited to gather under our Tent to experience these continuing journeys as shared experiences.

Creative director, scholar and Gemini award-winning filmmaker Cyrus Sundar Singh hosted attendees on a trail of experiences, including film, photography, material art and performance. The audience heard from the creators who reflected on their own stories of living in Canada’s multicultural society.

Under the Tent was presented at the Aga Khan Museum's Bellerive Room between 4 and 7 pm, Saturday, July 2, 2022. The program comprised of three, 40-minute parts.

The Under the Tent program was presented at the Aga Khan Museum during Rhythms of Canada (external link) , a week-long festival celebrating the diverse tapestry of Canadian culture.

About Under the Tent

Under the Tent (external link, opens in new window)  is a multimedia, creative research project that selected, through a competition, 18 graduate students from across Canada to explore their experiences of Canadian multiculturalism, race and diversity by producing creative work in a medium of their choice. The project aims to generate new insights and understanding through the deep reflections that come with creative production. The creative producers invite audiences to engage with them in reconsidering multiculturalism and its future possibilities. The project is led by Cyrus Sundar Singh and Anna Triandafyllidou, the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration at Toronto Metropolitan University.
