Five Qs About You and TMU: Sophie
The Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM) is the business school here at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), and it is home to five undergraduate majors to match almost any business interest. I recently chatted with Sophie, a TRSM student in her third year of Business Management with a focus in Human Resources Management to learn more about her program and student life.
Jenna: Can you describe your program to me in one sentence?
Sophie: Learning how to leverage the human capital in your organization.
J: Why did you choose to study at TMU?
S: I grew up in Barrie [about an hour-and-a-half from Toronto], and I knew that I didn't want to be too far from my mom and my siblings. My two siblings had already moved to Toronto, so I had a few options within the city. I preferred the campus, and it had the most interesting program offerings, so I decided to pick TMU.
J: Can you tell me about any experiential learning that you’ve participated in?
S: Being in the co-op program, I’ve had a lot of experiential learning opportunities. I’ve already completed two of my work terms. My first one was in finance at Scotiabank, and my second was as an HR assistant intern at Mr. Mow It All. I really enjoyed being in a position that contributed to a company’s overall goals and missions, and that allowed me to do meaningful work with teams. I found it valuable because you get insight into the world of work, and what to expect after graduation. Working in different kinds of industries and sectors has given me a broader view of what I might want to do after school.
J: What is your favourite thing that you've experienced on campus?
S: I’m an Events Director for the Ted Rogers Pride Alliance (external link, opens in new window) . We had a queer mixer earlier in the fall, which was an opportunity for all the queer students and allies to come by and meet each other, have some snacks, meet the team, play some games and just have a fun time. We set up in the Pitman Quad and it was just a good way for people to chat and make friends.

J: What advice would you give to someone who is starting their research about which university or program they want to pursue?
S: When I was looking at universities I didn't know what program I wanted to do. So, I would say pick a few programs or disciplines that you think you're interested in, and research the universities around you to see what their program offerings are like, then compare and contrast them. Pick somewhere that has a program and a location you like. Don't just pick a school because your friends are all there. Do your own research and do what is best for you, even if you pick a school that no one else that you know is going to. You will make more friends and you'll have so much fun because you get to explore a new city and meet new people. It's just a new learning experience. It’s scary, I'm not going to sugarcoat it, but you need to take that leap because if you take that leap then you set yourself up for more growth.
