Tumaini Lyaruu lives, learns, loves and creates as an uninvited guest in Tkarón:to from the east African diaspora. Prior to entering the midwifery education program at Ryerson University in 2017, Tumaini’s research and community health work experience were rooted in supporting community based research and arts based programming focused on HIV/AIDS, harm reduction and sexual/reproductive health with 2SLGBTQ+, African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) youth and adults. It is through this work that Tumainis interest in community based clinical practice grew and Tumaini learned about the midwifery profession. As a midwifery student, Tumaini endeavours to learn clinical skills and how to integrate those skills in ways that support the well-being and communal/familial/self-determination for ACB pregnant people and families.
