A Gemini Award-winning filmmaker, doctoral scholar, and musician Cyrus, external link (external link)  is also a poet, storyteller, and change-maker. Positioning himself as an AcademiCreActivist, external link (external link) , Cyrus continues to expand and find cracks in conventional boundaries presenting his research, films, and music at numerous national and international broadcasts, festivals, and conferences. 



His recent essays are published in peer reviewed collections: Floating to the Lure of the Promised Land in Refuge in Canada: Narratives of Dislocation, external link (external link)  (2020); How We See: The Colourization of Race in Gnosis: Journal of Philosophy , external link (external link) (2020). Cyrus’ photo/video installation Emancipation2Africville, external link (external link)  formed part of the Africville: A Spirit that Lives On- A Reflection Project , external link (external link) at the MSVU Art Gallery in Nova Scotia (2019) and footage at WC2 Symposium Toronto (2018).



Cyrus’ directorial debut Film Club, external link (external link)  is the winner of both a Gemini Award and the National Film Board of Canada’s Reel Diversity Award. On the foundation of his sixteen-year documentary/storytelling career, he conceived and successfully explored a new site-specific hybrid live-documentary genre, Performing the Documentary, with world premieres at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival: Brothers In The Kitchen, external link (external link)   (2016); Africville in Black and White, external link (external link)  (2017) and at the Atlantic Film Festival (2018). 



As an award-winning composer Cyrus’ credits include, Genie Award Winner Moving Day, the Gemini Award Nominated Twisted Sheets, external link (external link) Film Club, external link (external link) , and the International Award-winning documentary film Salaam Shalom: The Jews of India. His musical scores for CBC Radio Dramas have premiered to national and international audiences. As a singer/songwriter, Cyrus’ musical journeys have culminated in the release of his critically acclaimed CD, Sun to Star, external link (external link) 


Cyrus, external link (external link)  has written, produced and directed in a range of genres including documentary, reality, food, and lifestyle for various international broadcasters including BellMedia, CBC, VisionTV, Smithsonian Channel, Discovery Channel, and MuchMusic. His productions have taken him around the world including India, Israel, Spain, Haiti, Jamaica, and Sri Lanka. His writings have been published in poetry anthologies, academic journals, and peer reviewed medical journals.
