Alex Broom
Alex Broom is a professor of sociology and director of the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies at The University of Sydney. The Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies, which he also founded, is now a flagship centre of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, with 300 members and 16 theme leaders across five countries. Bloom is recognized as an international leader in sociology, with a specific interest in health, illness and care. His work takes a person-centred approach, qualitatively exploring the intersections of individual experience and social, political and economic context.
Broom has worked across many different spheres of health, illness and wellbeing, contributing to scholarship in areas as diverse as the sociology of emotions; personhood and belonging; relations of care and harm; moralities of affliction; ecologies and multispecies relations; and the sociology of death, dying and bereavement. His recent books include Dying (2015), Bodies and Suffering (2017 with Ana Dragojlovic) and Survivorship (2021 with Katie Kenny).
