Teaching and learning through social justice
The Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching will soon seek participants for the first cohort of the new Teaching and Learning Through Social Justice Credential. The new CELT offering was designed to support educators in developing and expanding their understanding and skills related to teaching about and through social justice and equity in the classroom, with the hope of applying their experience during the 2024/25 school year.
Participants will spend the length of the credential reading, designing, evaluating, and sharing a teaching strategy related to social justice and will be centered around a collective reading experience of Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom (external link) by Kelly A. Hogan and Viji Sathy paired with supplementary readings from Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope by bell hooks.
"I’m very much looking forward to getting a chance to work with colleagues to think through together how to strengthen our teaching strategies in the classroom in this way," says Renee Ferguson, Educational Developer at CELT. "I’ve been lucky enough to have more informal conversations with people one-on-one and to hear about the thoughtful ways that people are teaching from an equity-based foundation and how they want to grow in this area. Here’s a chance to formally and regularly come together and have this conversation - and bonus, it’s around a book!"
