Naming

Naming ties closely to the brand and reputation of the University and can include descriptive, creative or placemaking opportunities (e.g., the naming of a centre or institute). Naming can also be commemorative in nature or connected to a benefactor. When considering a proposed Naming opportunity, it is crucial that the name proposed aligns with the University’s values, and will not compromise the integrity and autonomy of the University.

Have questions? Please contact your faculty/department/unit’s MarComm lead or tmubrand@torontomu.ca.

Naming Initiatives

  • For naming initiatives including descriptive, creative or placemaking opportunities, please contact the MarComm lead for your faculty/department/unit. They will then connect with University Relations who will review the request and recommend an approach (via email), which may include questions, feedback, and proposed alternatives. Other contacts (i.e. General Counsel) may be included in the conversations based on the nature of the project or initiative.
  • Some examples of Naming initiatives include new names for Centres, Institutes, Campus Eateries, Zones, Campus spaces, etc.
  • For additional details visit the Brand Stewardship Procedures page.

Commemorative and Benefactor Naming

For commemorative or benefactor naming, please refer to the Naming Policy as well as the Naming Procedures which outlines the process.
