Artificial Intelligence at TMU
Toronto Metropolitan University is embracing the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) with a commitment to responsible innovation, integrity, equity and inclusion. As AI reshapes how we teach, learn, research and work, TMU is advancing a vision that places student success, academic excellence and societal impact at the centre.
At TMU, we are dedicated to cultivating a university environment where AI responsibly supports learning, accelerates discovery, and expands creative expression. Our commitment is to ensure that these new opportunities are always met with fair and equitable access for all and that we follow a human-centered approach.
TMU supports and encourages responsible innovation with, and continuous evaluation of, Gen AI (GAI) technologies and the potential benefits and opportunities. The university will lead in the development and application of these technologies across a wide range of disciplines. It will also lead in the critical evaluation and critique of GAI and its effects on society.
AI is being explored across the university to:
- Transform teaching and learning by enhancing pedagogy, creativity and student success.
- Strengthen research and creative activity through new tools for discovery, analysis and collaboration.
- Enrich the student experience with accessible, innovative and equitable applications.
- Improve operations and services by exploring how AI can support efficiency, decision-making and engagement.
- Ensure ethics and compliance by aligning AI use with academic integrity, privacy and policy frameworks.
- Advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in AI by increasing equitable access to AI.
- Mitigate bias, build digital literacy, and ensure diverse perspectives and data inform all AI initiatives.
To help guide this work, TMU has established the Leadership Task Force on Generative AI, which will provide recommendations, frameworks and resources to ensure AI is adopted thoughtfully and strategically across the institution. The task force’s efforts are part of a broader commitment to preparing our community for a future where AI is deeply integrated into academic, professional and civic life.
