What questions should you ask at Discover TMU: Open House?

If you’ve been thinking about university lately, you know by now just how much there is to think about. Application deadlines. Prerequisites. Transfer credits. Fees. Programs. The list goes on.

I’m Ido, a fourth-year Image Arts: Film student at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), and I’m also your student ambassador! Four years ago, I was starting Grade 12 and trying to map out my future. There were many things I didn’t know about university, and I wasn’t entirely sure what questions to ask. Back then, I tried coming up with questions by reflecting on my daily routine in high school and imagining what the differences would be in university. I also signed up for some emails from universities and read forums online. All of that helped, but what really convinced me to choose TMU was visiting the campus. Experiencing TMU in person allowed me to imagine myself there the next year. I learned where my program’s main building was, where students get coffee and where I could go if I had questions. It also gave me a chance to connect with people who could provide answers to my questions — even the ones I didn’t know I had yet!

If you haven’t had a chance to visit TMU yet, you should check out Discover TMU: Open House. The event is packed with faculty information sessions, campus tours, a fair featuring representatives from student clubs and groups and more. Experiencing the campus for yourself is a valuable way to fill in the missing pieces you aren’t sure about, and find new things to be excited about!

It’s helpful to arrive on campus with a list of things you’d like to know. But if you know you’ve got questions but aren’t exactly sure what they are, I’m here to help! Whether you’re starting university next year, planning ahead for a few years down the road or transferring schools, here are 6 questions you should ask members of our community at Discover TMU: Open House.

1. What makes this program special at TMU?

If the program you’re interested in is offered at different schools, you should be thinking about what advantages TMU could offer. That could be a co-op offering or a unique facility. For me, learning that TMU is the only Canadian university that houses a Motion Picture Lab (one of only a few left) was a unique selling feature for a film program.

2. What prerequisites and grades do I need?

Different programs at TMU require that you complete different high school courses. The Image Arts: Film program, for instance, did not require Grade 12 math (luckily for me). If you’re applying for a competitive program, you’ll want to know how high you’ll need to keep up your grades. And if you’re not in Grade 12 yet, you’ll want to know which courses to take for the remainder of your high school career. 3. What career path can my program lead to?

University can open so many professional doors for your future. Understanding the path that alumni from my program at TMU took to establish their careers after graduating really helped my decision to apply. Asking about professional opportunities within your program and the pathways after convocation could help you visualize your future 5 or even 10 years down the line.

4. Can I transfer credits from my current school or previous program?

If you’ve earned post-secondary credits before, you should explore which courses could count towards your degree at TMU. Transfer credits could mean you save time and money (and save yourself from having to repeat a course!).

5. What financial assistance and scholarships are available?

If you’re totally unsure of how to finance your education, asking about Student Financial Assistance and Scholarships and Awards at TMU is a great first step. Academic entrance scholarships are one way to make university more affordable. Getting good marks in Grade 12 could pay off, as renewable entrance scholarships could save you up to $12,000 in tuition fees over four years. That’s like 2,000 cups of coffee, which is enough for a whole week!

6. What student services are offered?

TMU is the #1 university in student services, in Maclean’s 2026 University Rankings — Best Comprehensive Universities category. You’ll want to learn about Athletics and RecreationLearning Support and many of the other services that are included in your tuition.

Hopefully these questions get you thinking about what else you’d like to ask when visiting TMU. University is a big change, which is exciting, but there’s a lot to consider. The good news is that all the questions you’re unsure about have answers, and visiting campus is the perfect time to find them!

Until next time,

Ido, your student ambassador
