Five Qs about you and TMU: Mila Vujnovic
Mila is a third-year Business Management student in the Ted Rogers School of Management here at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). She majors in Marketing Management and is working towards a minor in Finance. I had such a nice time listening to her encouraging advice to study something you “can’t pick up on your own” if you’re struggling to choose a program. From workout classes and coffee shops to getting more involved in the business world, keep reading further to learn more about what Mila has to say.
Mila is a third-year Business Management student who has a major in Marketing at TMU.
Hadiqah: Can you describe your program to me in one sentence?
Mila: I would say the business program is innovative and fun. I think in the first year you have a general business degree: accounting courses, economics courses and human resources. It kind of explores all of the majors.
As you move forward and pick your major, the program becomes more focused on that. What I like about it is that it is really applicable to real life. You learn a lot of life business skills, and whatever you go into the future, you can apply business to it.
H: Why did you choose to study at TMU?
Mila: It was COVID times during my application process, so I did a lot of the virtual tours. Having the opportunity to study in a big city would open up my network unlike any other place. The city inspires me to work towards a business degree. I’m surrounded by numerous major companies, and am probably close to where I’ll land a job in the future. I find the vibe and energy of the city inspires me both academically and professionally. So, I kind of thought it was a really cool experience, and the commute also resonated with me.
H: Can you tell me about any experiential learning you’ve participated in? What other opportunities are you looking forward to?
Mila: I have attended numerous group fitness classes on campus, networking events and became a general member of the Women in Leadership (external link, opens in new window) club. I also just started a job as a student ambassador for TMU.
Regarding opportunities I am looking forward to, I definitely want to get more involved in the zones. You can pitch a business idea that has already started up and potentially receive funding from the school for it, or help other small businesses and startups. There are different zones and areas, like The Fashion Zone and the DMZ (opens in new window) .
H: What is your favourite thing that you have experienced on campus?
Mila: My favourite thing is the community, everyone is very open and themselves. I see a lot of self-expression through clothing and the energy on campus is also really fulfilling. I love the coffee shops on campus, like Balzac’s. Even the Quad is really pretty if you want to explore the outdoors while on campus. I also love the student events and community. Finally, the group fitness classes offered through Recreation are always so uplifting and make my day so much better.
Balzac’s is a coffee shop located right on campus at 122 Bond Street.
H: What advice would you give someone who is starting their research about which university or program they want to pursue?
Mila: My biggest piece of advice is to not look at what everyone else is doing. You might be interested in a program unexpectedly. For example, business was always something I was interested in, but I was too afraid to study the stock market on my own and wanted to learn how.
When you're choosing a school, you want to be selfish because it can be easy to get influenced by external sources. You have to think of the community, day-to-day life and what you’ll get from the experience. Before I picked my program, I looked at all of the courses and their descriptions. I asked myself if it was the right fit and if I saw myself downtown. I watched YouTube videos and immersed myself in each experience, and that helped make my decision.
I had a great time talking with Mila and learned about her hopes for further involvement at TMU, specifically her goal to partake in Zone Learning as a business student. If Business Management interests you, take a look at our How to Apply page.
