Nishka’s 3 Ms For Reducing Stress
Feeling stressed is pretty common for students, especially when school starts to pick up. I think that I’ve mastered how to keep myself calm during these times, and I’d like to share some of these tips with you. I’ve organized my techniques into the 3 M’s of reducing stress: movement, meditation and motivation.
Movement
Back in high school my psychology teacher would take us to the gym to play some floor hockey before tests. The first time he did this we were all a bit confused, but we thought, “hey, we get to play some games before a test”, so nobody was complaining. He then later told us that getting active releases endorphins, which in turn helps to reduce our stress levels. Ever since then, I make sure to stay active, especially during exam time because I know this is when I need it the most. Our university has a lot of options available for you whether they be online or in-person. Some ways I like to keep moving include doing yoga, exercising or even taking a walk. Remember to keep in mind that movement doesn’t just help your physical health, but mental health as well.
Meditation
The time I tend to get the most anxious is right before an interview. I have jitters and a stomach full of butterflies, but now I’ve learned that a great way to ground myself is by meditating. It’s so easy to do, you begin by sitting down in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Then all you have to do is focus on your breathing. I know the mind tends to wander, but just remember that if you start thinking about something else, just acknowledge it and come back to breathing.
In addition to meditating by myself, I like following guided meditation videos such as the ones provided by our university’s mindfulness resource page. You can also find videos that cater to your specific needs on YouTube with one quick search. So, if you happen to get the jitters before interviews like me, take a minute and meditate, who knows, maybe it’ll be your new go to relaxation method like me.
Motivation
There was a time during my university experience when I felt like I was not living up to my fullest potential when I came across a podcast called “The Mindset Mentor (external link, opens in new window) ”. The podcast host, Rob Dial, helped me realize that if I want to change my life then I can simply wake up one day and do it. Ever since I started listening to motivational podcasts and speeches, I’ve gained the energy to take on every day with my head held up high. You can find motivational speeches online for any occasion, which is the true beauty of it. Listening to them can help boost your confidence and in turn, reduce your stress.
I really hope that me sharing my coping mechanisms has given you some ideas on how to manage your own stress. Just remember, when in doubt, Nishka’s 3 M’s are here to help you out!
“See” you soon!
