Thank you for attending the PFAS Symposium on Governance and Technical Strategies!
June 16, 2026
On June 16th, Urban Water TMU hosted a full day in-person Symposium on Governance and Technical Strategies for PFAS Management at Toronto Metropolitan University, in partnership with the Ontario Water Consortium, Pollution Probe, and Water Canada
The Symposium was built upon the Findings of the PFAS Management in Canada Workshop held on September 16th 2025, and hosted Government of Canada officials who presented the GOC’s risk management strategy and framework for coordinating advancements across sectors. Moreover, presenters from the EU highlighted advancements on governance and technical approaches to managing PFAS in the EU.
There was a discussion of managing PFAS entering the environment with a needs and substitutes framework and removing PFAS with particular attention to wastewater treatment plants. Technologies and approaches for PFAS removal and destruction were presented alongside an analysis of the risks, challenges, costs, and the accessibility of the options presented. Discussions included beneficial use and biosolids application in agricultural lands.
Participants were invited to consolidate what they have heard and recommend a roadmap for Canada which was recorded and shared with participants and stakeholders.
The Symposium brought together stakeholders from all levels of government, utilities, engineering consultant firms, technology providers, non-profit organizations, and academia to discuss governance and technical strategies for PFAS management.
A findings document will be prepared with outcomes and for more info contact - angela.murphy@torontomu.ca
