2025-2026 Student Leadership Comittee
The 2025–2026 Urban Water Student Leadership Committee (SLC) continued to make a strong impact through environmental action, student engagement, and community building. The SLC supported the Campus Greening Initiative in partnership with TRCA, helping expand TMU’s downtown urban canopy through the planting of more than 400 trees and shrubs. The committee also partnered with the TMU Indigenous Students Association to host an engaging event focused on Indigenous water issues in Canada, bringing together students, community members, and expert speakers. Meet the 2025-2026 Student Leadership Committee Executive Members
Student Events and Initiatives
The 2025–2026 Urban Water Student Leadership Committee (SLC) continued its impactful partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) to expand the downtown urban canopy. In close collaboration with TMU’s Sustainability Office and Facilities Maintenance staff, the committee led student engagement efforts that resulted in more than 400 new trees and shrubs planted across TMU's downtown Toronto campus between Fall 2024 and Fall 2026.
In March 2026, the SLC partnered with the TMU Indigenous Students Association to present Indigenous Water Issues in Canada: Community Voices and Expert Discussion. Led by Eric Fries, the well-attended event brought together TMU members and the broader community, featuring guest speakers:
· Terry Duguid - MP, Special Advisor on Water and longstanding environmental and water advocate. Terry welcomed the audience and thanked the organizers for bringing this important topic to the TMU community.
· Layla Statts – A Cree-Mohawk musician, filmmaker, and activist, Statts shared her personal and professional experiences supporting Indigenous communities through storytelling, film excerpts, and live musical performance.
· Dr. David Atkinson – A researcher who discussed his work building collaborative relationships with Inuit communities in Baker Lake and Pond Inlet. Dr. Atkinson presented the film Imilarjit, which highlights how local community members are leading initiatives for safe drinking water.
