The National Institute on Ageing (NIA), based at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management, is pleased to announce the appointment of leading policy expert Michael Nicin as Executive Director.

“The NIA is committed to improving the financial and health aspects of Canada’s ageing population,” says Al Goss, academic director of the NIA and associate dean, students. “Michael’s extensive experience creating and implementing policy to better the lives of seniors makes him perfectly suited to the institute’s mandate.”

For the first time in Canadian history, there are more seniors than children, presenting new challenges and opportunities for governments, institutions, businesses and families.

“It’s an exciting time to lead the NIA, particularly at one of the most energetic and innovative universities in the country,” said Nicin. “Canada’s ageing population presents the opportunity to fundamentally rethink how we approach health care, retirement security and other facets of our social fabric to meet the diverse needs of seniors, and to help them thrive.”

As acting Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Advisor to the Ontario Minister of Seniors Affairs, Nicin recently led the design and launch of the $155 million provincial seniors strategy, Aging with Confidence, Ontario's Action Plan for Seniors in November 2017. Prior to this he also served as the Director of Policy and Strategic Planning for CARP, a 300,000 member based advocacy organization for older Canadians, where he focused on retirement security and health care innovation policy.

Additionally, Nicin led the policy and program design of the new $500 million Ontario Autism Program for children and youth as Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Children and Youth Services.

Nicin has a Master of Public Policy from the University of Toronto and a Master of History from York University.  He also received a BA in History from the University of Waterloo.

Nicin’s appointment is effective January 8, 2018.
