Innovation and Experiential Learning

We advance equity, diversity and inclusion and Indigenous perspectives through our programs, workshops, innovative teaching and curriculum delivery. We strive to provide flexibility and access for learners beyond the classroom walls. In 2022-2023, students experienced lessons taught in engaging and innovative ways.

Virtual Circle K convenience store

In Dr. Janice Rudkowski's Retailer Perspectives on Category Management (RMG806) class, students will get to experience immersive virtual reality, as they explore and complete tasks in a virtual Circle K convenience store. This hands-on learning experience brings VR into the classroom, but because it is virtual, accommodates students wherever they are based. The online learning experience is also available through eCampus Ontario enhancing access for faculty and institutions across the province.

 Experiential learning

Ted Rogers School of Management students also took on global challenges in sustainability and health care and broadened their perspectives through experiential learning.

For example, students took part in a How to Change the World bootcamp, which focused on positively impacting the complex sustainability challenges faced by communities around the world. For a week, students explored solutions to one of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (external link, opens in new window) .

Health Services Management students took part in a four-month Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) program with a cohort of students from the U.K., Finland and India, to solve global problems in healthcare like emergency room wait times. The experience gave students an understanding of prominent health care issues that occur the world over and they were able to problem-solve solutions as a team.

MBA students gained valuable international experience through the International Experience Capstone (MB 8018) course, which helped them understand business culture in Chile in 2022 and Argentina in 2023. The course integrates everything MBA students have learned over the program - from strategy, operations and sustainability – and puts it all together to find a solution for companies.

 Global perspectives

We partner with institutions beyond Toronto Metropolitan University to strengthen learning and broaden perspectives locally, nationally and internationally.

Elevate talent

Our Business Career Hub has a partnership with Elevate Talent (external link, opens in new window) , a job training and work placement program designed to reskill and place individuals from underrepresented communities in the tech and innovation sectors.

Enactus TMU student group & ShePreneur

In 2022, the Enactus TMU student group partnered with ShePreneur founder, Tanya Dodaro, to deliver workshops to equip women with the tools, skills and mindsets they need to start their own businesses. Just over 40 women across Latin America and Africa took part in a 10-week program which gave participants the skills, support and coaching required to start a business.

Supporting international students

Faculty at the Ted Rogers School helped 26 displaced Ukrainian high school students in the summer of 2022 take their university entrance exams. Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd was asked to lead the initiative, supported by Technology Support Admin Hong Ki Lee and volunteers from the Social Media Lab. Selected as one of two Canadian universities to administer the testing, the Ted Rogers School was thanked by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment and the Donetsk Regional Center for Educational Quality Assessment.
