Student Honours & Awards

The undertaking by Ryerson students of their own SRC activities has resulted in well-deserved accolades from beyond the Ryerson campus. These are just a few of the honours and awards students received during the 2018-19 year.

Faculty of Arts

PhD candidate Nathaniel Brunt (Communication and Culture) was awarded a 2018 Pierre Trudeau Foundation scholarship. He will explore how photography influences perceptions of war, particularly the conflict in the disputed South Asian territory of Kashmir.

Faculty of Communication and Design

Judy Luo (School of Performance) was a recipient of The Hnatyshyn Foundation Emerging Artist award in the category of contemporary dance. Offered in honour of the late Right Honourable Ramon Hnatyshyn, the award supports the nurturing of performing artists across Canada.

Faculty of Community Services

Emily Morrison (Occupational and Public Health) was selected as a Global Winner in the category of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Healthcare by the Undergraduate Awards for her paper on food safety messages on popular recipe blogs.

Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science

Tatiana Estrina (Architectural Science) won first place in an international design competition held by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Her project, UPROOT, looked at redeveloping an open-pit mine as community farmland.

Faculty of Science

The Geoffrey F. Bruce Fellowship in Canadian Freshwater Policy was awarded to two students. Madeleine Martin, a PhD candidate in Environmental Applied Science and Management, will focus her research on the use of social media by citizens and non-governmental organizations to bring attention to adverse environmental actions by multinational and domestic corporations. Michelle Woodhouse, a Master’s student in Environmental Applied Science and Management, will investigate the City of Toronto’s green infrastructure strategies for water management, quality and quantity, with the objective of contributing to stronger national freshwater policies.

Ted Rogers School of Management

A seven-person Ryerson team of undergraduate students competed against 22 schools at the Northeast Intercollegiate Sales Competition. Team members like Kaitlann Silao (Business Management) and Sarah Oliver (Hospitality and Tourism Management) competed in individual sales competitions, placing high enough for Ryerson to be named overall university champion.
