Dean's Teaching Award – Faculty (RFA) Recipients

The Deans’ Teaching Award – Faculty recognizes Ryerson faculty members (RFA) who have demonstrated continuing teaching excellence and achievement in instruction. The awards will be distributed according to the Faculty of the nominee: Faculty of Arts, The Creative School, Faculty of Community Services, Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science, and the Ted Rogers School of Management.

Award recipient(s) will receive a certificate of recognition and a monetary award of $2,000 as a one-time payment (subject to applicable deductions). 

2022 recipients

Marc Adler

Department of Chemistry and Biology, Faculty of Science

Organic chemistry is complicated and many professors are unimaginative and rote in their teaching of the curriculum. Yet, Dr. Marc Adler constantly strives to make the material stimulating and memorable as he combines revised and fresh curriculum with innovative teaching strategies. Whether hosting seminar series with visiting scholars, or conducting field trips to a local distillery for the students to learn chemistry-in-action, Marc’s teaching acumen constantly garners praise from the students. This is attributed in no small part to his caring of successful student outcomes as he constantly reimagines how to make each of the courses he teaches more effective.

Ian Baitz

School of Graphic Communications Management, The Creative School

Ian Baitz is a passionate educator, committed to lifelong and lifewide learning at The Creative School, where he has been teaching for two decades. With an academic background in flexible learning, he did not waste a minute when faced with emergency online teaching. In addition to creating an engaging atmosphere for students using a variety of online tools, he also found ways to see the situation as an opportunity! In the midst of a difficult year, Ian created an online event to showcase student capstone thesis projects. Now our entire school community can enjoy the Virtual Thesis Expo online.

Nicole Bennett

Midwifery Education Program, Faculty of Community Services

Nicole Bennett is a highly respected and extraordinarily committed educator who excels in clinical teaching. She creates challenging and facilitative environments that support students to take ownership of their learning. She deftly integrates students’ needs and feedback, evidence-based material, into any curricular revisions. As one of her current students noted: “Nicole is a truly gifted professor. Not only is she knowledgeable and compassionate, but she is truly engaging to learn from.” She works tirelessly to infuse the curriculum with diversity and inclusion with a particular attention to social justice issues and to increase the diversity of our students and instructors.

Steve Daniels

RTA School of Media, The Creative School

Steve Daniels has been essential to the growth of the new media program over the last few decades. He is an educator focused on innovative approaches to build artworks and communities across networks such as Nerd Nite International and Tangible Tactics in Zoom. He is driven by a deep caring for students. Every initiative he is a part of focuses on bettering student experiences. His curiosity and passion for teaching has made him create many “first” learning experiences in the classroom. His mentorship has fostered senior staff that have gone on to become leaders in many creative domains.

Angela Lee

Lincoln Alexander School of Law

Professor Angela Lee is an outstanding candidate for the Dean’s Teaching Award – Faculty (RFA). In the Lincoln Alexander School of Law’s inaugural year and in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, no less, she stood out as a star educator with her innovative teaching techniques and commitment to student success. Her revamp of the Law and Legal Methods intensive gave students a wonderful first impression of the law school that embodied its underlying pillars and instilled greater confidence within 1L students. Her teaching effectiveness has been recognized by the Law Students’ Society, who awarded her Professor of the Year.

Funke Oba

School of Social Work, Faculty of Community Services

In today’s educational environment, the requisite combination of insight, commitment to social justice, personal courage, respect, sensitivity, adaptability, and highly developed teaching skills is rare indeed. Dr. Funke Oba is a master of these attributes, integrating reflexive teaching, intercultural analysis, and skills to achieve remarkable connections and outcomes with students. Funke is therefore not only an exemplar of Teaching Excellence but of excellence in the current direction of teaching for social justice and equity that Canada, this university, and the profession of Social work needs. I can think of no-one more deserving of this award than Dr. Funke Oba.

Oliver Okafor

School of Accounting and Finance, Department of Accounting, Ted Rogers School of Management

With a record of teaching excellence and hands-on doing teaching experience, Dr. Oliver Okafor was assigned one of the most complex accounting courses in the undergraduate program (Advanced Financial Accounting) when he joined Ryerson in 2017. As assistant professor, Oliver demonstrated that teaching and research are complementary to each other. Even in the pandemic time, Oliver showed that he is an effective teacher and a prolific researcher. He had impressive teaching evaluations, high research productivity, and served in various committees. His greatest assets are the enthusiasm he brings to the classroom and innovative hands-on doing teaching techniques.

Janice Rudkowski

School of Retail Management, Ted Rogers School of Management

Dr. Rudkowski has demonstrated excellence and leadership within the Retail school. She has embraced Ryerson’s diverse student population and has consistently incorporated equity, diversity, and inclusion into her teaching and curriculum as evidence by projects that directly involve Indigenous groups. Notably, Janice has led and managed Ryerson’s accreditation process whereby the Retail School became the first school in Canada to offer Category Management Association (CMA) certified training programs to students. Moreover, Dr. Rudkowski challenges students to embrace and further develop their creative thinking skills through innovative projects that directly connects students with local and national retailers.

Khaled Sennah

Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & Architectural Science

Khaled Sennah has demonstrated excellent teaching as a teacher. He effectively uses innovative teaching methods to attract students’ interest in Structural Engineering – going beyond the course syllabus. His leadership, commitment, passion, and hard work in teaching contribute significantly to the success of civil engineering students. His commitment to diversity, inclusivity and innovation is prevalent through his contributions in various department teaching initiatives. He exemplified boundless passion and energy as the Department Chair in curricular design and leadership in teaching, including addressing the high student-faculty ratio, enhancing teaching labs, providing student study space and the creation of the Structural Engineering.

Dafna Sussman

Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & Architectural Science

Dr. Dafna Sussman is an engaging and effective instructor, an innovative curriculum designer, and a promising educational leader. Her contemporary pedagogical approach pivots on a combination of active and experiential learning to stimulate student interest and motivation, increase comprehension, and promote collaborative skills, regardless of one’s learning style. Her dynamic, student-tailored, and inclusive in-person and online lectures encourage participation and promote critical thinking that enhances not only knowledge retention, but also intellectual growth. Dr. Sussman is a mentor and a role model for high-school, undergraduate, and graduate students, who inspires the next generation of scientists and engineers.
