Ravindra Mohabeer has a PhD in Communication and Culture with a dissertation that focused on navigating media as a life-skill, an MA in Communication Studies from Simon Fraser exploring social theories of time and public policy, and a BA Honours in Mass Communication and Political Science from York University that concentrated on media use through the lenses of urban and cultural studies. His main work engages the social location of invisibility as an exercise of inclusion/exclusion, sometimes using techniques from visual sociology, always interdisciplinary of mind. Combining theoretical considerations of belonging with applied DIY digital and physical media making and other interventions in culture, he asks how people and things come to matter. In the School of Journalism, he offers a bridge between communication studies and journalism practice, exploring how each can innovate because of the other. An enthusiastic emerging academic leader, he actively defines collaborative, mutual mentorship as a priority, and is particularly supportive of the needs and experiences of first-generation university learners and first-generation graduate students. Having lived and taught in a semi-rural community in BC for over a decade, his work is especially attentive to questions around cores and peripheries.
