Valerie Calam

(she/her)

Valerie Calam is a dance artist interested in finding pathways to refresh and support herself. She works with fabric, patterns, sound, numbers, the nervous system, the body, and likes to edit/adapt/repurpose things. Most of all, Val enjoys working alongside dancers, artists & queer creatives. She umbrellas much of her work under the name Company Vice Versa and works frequently with Fantastical Realms (Paul Shepherd).

Valerie is the Membership Coordinator & Operations Manager for CADA/East (Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists-East Chapter). She completed a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Choreography in 2014 and is the recipient of the KMHunter Award for dance.

Recently, Val worked with Toronto Dance Theatre, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, Bad New Days Theatre, Allison Cummings/Sore for Punching You (sound and set design), Citadel & Cie (performer), Michael Caldwell (costume design), Emma Kerson (sound design), ProArteDanza (improv teacher), Atri Nundy/TDT’s Convergent Divergency (costume design) and filmmakers Franci Duran and Michèle Kaye.  Val had the pleasure to mentor dance artist Jessica Mak through the generous support of Jaberi Dance Theatre’s Mentorship Program.

Currently, Valerie is in rehearsals for Nuit, choreographed by Jean-Pierre Perreault.  She will perform the work in Luminato this summer with Citadel & Cie. She is a faculty member and costume coordinator/designer/stylist for The School of Toronto Dance Theatre.
