At Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), there are dozens of services, resources and people ready to help you succeed.

As you settle into life at TMU, get to know the free academic, financial, social and well-being resources available to help you make the most of your university experience.

Academic Accommodation Support (AAS)

AAS provides resources, education, training and direct services such as academic accommodation plans so people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to access and participate in higher education.

We work with any student enrolled at TMU who requires disability-related academic accommodation, regardless of program or course load.

AI and Academic Integrity Office

The Academic Integrity Office exists to support students in adhering to  (PDF file) Policy 60: Academic Integrity and they’ve put together some tips for students who are wondering about using AI to complete their coursework.

Library

Explore everything you have access to at TMU Library

At the Library you can access research help, find digital and print resources across 19 Ontario academic libraries, get statistical consultation support and develop scholarly publishing skills. You can also find quiet individual study spaces and group study rooms. 

Looking to develop new skills or ways to creatively present research and projects? At TMU Library you have access to a 360 Immersion and Media Creation studio with photography and podcasting equipment, 3D printers, sewing machines and more.

Connecting with the Library early can pay off in terms of academic success.

Low Sensory Hours

Students who are looking for a quiet study place on campus can head to the low-sensory hours in the Student Learning Centre (SLC) located in the study lounge at SLC 451 and the math hub at SLC 449.

Low-sensory hours offer dimmed lights, minimal distractions, quiet snacks, access to peer academic coaches and fidget tools to aid students who need a bit of movement while studying.

Student Life and Learning Support

Student Life and Learning Support (SLLS) helps students of all years and programs learn essential academic skills and study techniques. 

SLLS offers both in-person and online appointments, and group and one-on-one tutoring sessions. Students can also access workshops on various topics like time management, focus and concentration, test and exam prep, and more. 

Tri-Mentoring Program

The Tri-Mentoring Program offers peer, career and group mentoring to students across all faculties.

TMU Tutor Match

TMU Tutor Match is a tool designed to help qualified students find paid work as tutors and to help students who would like additional, individualized, and course-specific support find and hire tutors.

Writing and language support

The Student Life and Learning office can help you develop academic writing skills through individual appointments, workshops and writing groups.

They offer three types of individual appointments:

Scholarships and bursaries

TMU offers a wide range of scholarships and bursaries for students who demonstrate academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, financial need or are of an equity-deserving group. Scholarships are typically merit-based and do not need to be repaid, making them an ideal source of funding. Bursaries, on the other hand, are awarded based on financial need and can provide essential support when you're facing a financial shortfall.

Student employment opportunities

Another way to manage the cost of your education is by taking advantage of student employment opportunities on and off campus. 

TMU's Career, Co-op & Student Success Centre offers a job search support platform where you can find part-time, full-time, and co-op positions to help finance your studies. 

The Career Boost Undergraduate program provides on-campus jobs to eligible full-time undergraduate students at TMU. The program works in partnership with academic units, administrative units, faculty, staff and students to support the practice and scholarship of learning at TMU.

The TMU Tutor Match program offers qualified students the chance to earn money by providing tutoring services to their peers.

Student Financial Assistance

Student Financial Assistance also helps students If you’re looking for information on government financial aid programs such as OSAP, out-of-province student loans, and U.S. student loans, you're in the right place.

Apply for your One Card

Your One Card is your official student I.D. It gives you access to campus services, like the TMU gyms and swimming pool; you can load money on it to pay for food and course materials; and gives you discounts on food, groceries, transit and more.

There’s a digital version that can be used for almost everything. Just make sure to pick up your physical One Card–you’ll need it for exams!

Navigate TMU

The Navigate TMU program was created to support students in feeling more confident in their first year and more knowledgeable of the skills and resources to navigate university. Their website is full of essential information for first-year students, including:

Centre for Student Development & Counselling

The centre offers free and confidential student-centred counselling. Students can meet one-on-one with a professional counsellor for immediate support and to make a plan for next steps. Other resources include group counselling, peer-to-peer support and referrals to community supports. Culturally relevant support is also available for equity-deserving students.

The Centre is located on the ground floor of Jorgenson Hall (JOR-07C). To book an appointment, call 416-979-5195 or email csdc@torontomu.ca.

Medical Centre

TMU’s on-campus medical centre serves current TMU students, staff and faculty. The Medical Centre offers a variety of health services to students such as assessments for common medical problems, vaccinations, reproductive health issues, gender-affirming care and more.

Peer Support

Student life brings with it the demands of academics, relationships, work, and all other facets of your life which may impact your wellbeing. Whether you're just starting university and want to learn how to promote your mental wellbeing throughout your student experience, or you're a current student and have been experiencing challenging feelings, it's important to have a space to share, feel understood, and learn skills for life which will prepare you to navigate difficult times.

Student Integrated Health and Wellbeing offers both group and individual peer support to all TMU students. Connect with Peer Support by emailing healthpromotion@torontomu.ca or calling 416-979-5000 ext. 4295.

Recreation, sports and fitness

Students can use their One Card to get free access to TMU’s two gyms, swimming pool, squash courts, group fitness classes and drop-in and intramural sports.

Most of TMU’s more than 50 sport and recreation activities take place at the Recreation & Athletics Centre (RAC). Students can also work out at Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC)’s cardio, weight-lifting and yoga spaces.

Recreation TMU also hosts women-only gym and swim times, classes geared toward the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. They also host occasional workshops on self-defence, nutrition and cooking and more.

Sexual violence support

The Consent Comes First team provides free, confidential, trauma-informed, healing-centred support to TMU students affected by sexual violence and other forms of gender-based violence. This team also offers consent education and bystander intervention training to the wider TMU community.

Student Care

The Student Care team offers support for students in distress and navigating complex academic, financial and wellbeing challenges. This team also works with the TMU community to address disruptive and concerning behaviour of students, including managing the complaint resolution process under the Student Code of Non-Academic Conduct (“The Code”).

Community members can contact the office to discuss a student they are concerned about at studentcare@torontomu.ca.

ThriveTMU

ThriveTMU provides training and resources to students, faculty and staff, teaching the skills associated with resilience, well-being and thriving in both an academic and personal context. 

Check out their resources such as 10 tips for resilience, the  (PDF file) Cultivate Your Happiness workbook, weekly exercises designed to help you manage challenges and cultivate your well-being, and the Thriving in Action program to learn and practise new strategies to thrive in your personal and academic life.

Clubs and organizations

Student Life and Learning Support (SLLS) provides opportunities for students to take ownership of their TMU experience so that they grow as socially, civically and academically engaged members of their communities. They help foster students find community on campus through activities, events and meaningful leadership experiences.

Faith rooms

TMU has two dedicated prayer spaces on campus for students to use.

The SCC Multi-Faith Room is located in the Student Campus Centre (OAK-319, 3rd floor). It provides a quiet atmosphere for prayer, worship, meditation and other spiritual and faith based activities on a drop-in basis for members of the TMU community of all faiths and followings.

TRS EDI Well-being Space is located in the Ted Rogers School (TRS 1-045, 7th floor). The space is available to members of the TMU community of all faiths/spiritualities or none at all, to pray, meditate, reflect, grieve or find quiet.

Food on campus

TMU Eats operates two dining halls, a grab-and-go cafe and a self-serve market where students can use dining dollars, cash or cards to pay for snacks and meals. Find specials throughout the year like the Friendly Fiver $5 meals and Free Soup Day.

Ted’s Kitchen, part of the Hospitality and Tourism Management department, is a quick-service kiosk located on the 7th floor of the Ted Rogers School. They offer coffee, tea, smoothies, salads, sandwiches and more, and are open for breakfast and lunch.

Free Food Locator (external link) 

Who doesn’t love free food? The Free Food Locator, available on Discord, connects TMU students to free food on campus. Initially launched in the early 2010s, this tool supplies students with up-to-the-minute details on when and where to find something to eat, for free!

Microwave Map

Bringing lunch from home? Find the closest microwave with Student Wellbeing’s Microwave Map.

Off-Campus Housing

Housing and Residence Life doesn’t just help students who live on campus. They also have resources for students looking to live off campus. Check out their tips for looking for a place to live, moving and tenant’s rights and responsibilities.

If you’re not quite ready to make the move downtown, Housing and Residence Life also operates a commuter hostel to make working on a late-night project or attending a weekend exam that much easier.

Student study spaces

TMU has created many spaces on campus where students can study, work and collaborate, including an entire Student Learning Centre

We also have spaces for students that may require intentional support. The Black Student LoungeIndigenous Student Centre and International Student Support offer affirming places where students across marginalized identities can heal, access resources and find connection in shared experiences.
