Meet fourth-year New Media Student Jessica Clarke-Joyce
New Media at Toronto Metropolitan University focuses on exposing students to a diverse range of mediums and approaches in the field of New Media such as exhibitions, interactive experiences, and video games.
Current fourth-year student, Jessica Clarke - Joyce shares her experiences in the program so far and why she chose New Media at TMU.
Hi, my name is Jess! I love all things fabrication and electronics! I took the New Media Art stream in my third year, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Getting to make art under the supervision of extremely talented and knowledgeable advisors have helped my artistic practice flourish. My artistic practice sits heavily within a tangible media space. I love blending technology such as Arduino, Touch Designer, and Pure Data, with physical fabrication.
When choosing my post-secondary path, New Media felt like the most natural progression of my artistic journey. I have a deep passion for interactive work that engages with participants. I believe interactive art has the power to tell immersive and intimate stories connecting artists to participants.

Jess' project for NMA 321: Divided We Beg
My experience at New Media so far has been amazing! I have been able to hone my artistic practice, and I am establishing my voice as an artist. Labs and Lectures offered by New Media have helped with accomplishing these things. My favourite course is a tie between NMA 321 Intro to Tangible Media and NMA 501 Studio Practice. I am most proud of my project for NMA 501, Divided We Beg. I made an over 6ft tall ivory tower covered in white fabric that was slowly dyed red, and would repeat back what was said to it through a microphone and speaker.

I wish more people knew the number of pathways that New Media can unlock for you as an artist. From making video games, installation art, and digital art; New Media can help you curate your voice as an artist.
