In the final year of study, New Media students curate an exhibition of their thesis projects

April 22, 2025

In the 4th year of study, New Media students take NMA 82A/B “New Media Thesis Project” where they work on innovative new media productions at an advanced level. The course culminates in a student-led exhibition which brings together a diverse range of projects that span across a variety of mediums and artistic practices.

Image of Hiba Abdurahman's project Fragments of Home (external link)  which explores the emotional challenges immigrants in Toronto face, highlighting the lack of community and isolation many experience after leaving their homes for better lives in Canada. Through intimate portraits, the photographs capture moments of loneliness and the weight of navigating a new life without a familiar community.

For 2025, the New Media thesis exhibition is METAMORPHASIS (external link) . From the students’ curatorial statement, METAMORPHOSIS arose from a period of uncertainty. As emerging artists in a tumultuous cultural and social landscape, transformation represents resilience. The ability to adapt is not just a necessity but a creative force – one that shapes both our individual practices and the broader field.

By graduation in the New Media program, students are expected to demonstrate professional level abilities of critical thinking, proposal writing, project production, and public presentation strategy. Through the completion of a thesis project, New Media graduates are prepared for rigorous artistic practice and creative careers.

Created with acrylic paint, pearlescent watercolour, shrinking plastic sheets, clear acrylic, and Arduino components, these materials come together to bring butterfly specimens to life.

Image of Tiange Yang's and Jianle Xu's project, Treasure Hunt (external link)  which explores the intersection of language, cognition, and personal growth through an interactive 2D word game. Inspired by the power of words to shape perception, identity, and self-discovery, the game transforms language into a journey of exploration and introspection. Players navigate through puzzles that not only challenge their linguistic abilities but also invite them to reflect on the emotional and philosophical weight of words.
