Overview
Ann C. Poochareon, founder, business leader, mother and activist passed away in early 2021 from breast cancer. In her wake, she has left a far-reaching legacy of activism, leadership, and community-building. Ann was dedicated to engaging people through the combination of science and art (STEAM). She began her career in Chicago, graduating with a degree in computer science before moving to New York to attend NYU’s illustrious Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) for her masters. After graduating, Ann co-founded Aesthetec Studio, working on the interactive design of major museums in Thailand, Canada, and the US. Following the birth of her son Oren in 2013, she co-founded Little Robot Friends, an education company focused on creatively teaching children coding, electronics, and digital literacy through accessible activities and workshops. In 2019, she was recognized for her efforts as a recipient of the Government of Canada’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund. These accomplishments barely touch on the incredible impact that she had with her colleagues, her community (locally and abroad), and her family. Ann was bold and direct, compassionate and caring. In her limited time with us, her light shone brightly. In her final time battling the disease she was an ardent supporter of young women of color. Her wish was to level the playing field and give support to diverse voices like hers in STEAM fields. This award aims to help her with this wish – to establish a legacy of supporting diverse, strong women.
Faculty member Mark Argo has generously created the Art+Tech Award in memory of his wife, Ann C. Poochareon, who was an ardent supporter of women in media and technology.
