MEMO hosted its first workshop with the lead research partners and advisors to discuss the preliminary objectives of visualization tools and to put plans in motion for other initiatives, such a future conference, working papers and a MEMO handbook.
Recap
Mehrunnisa Ali introduced the concepts of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion having different meanings in different social contexts. The understanding of equity and inclusion can change over time through our personal experiences. That is why it is important to have everyone reflect on not only their own personal understandings of equity but also reflect on how equity, diversity and inclusion (or lack thereof) are contextualized in cultures and societies. These principles are considered when completing MEMO research design.

Gabby Resch presented preliminary results from work carried out jointly by the MEMO Working Group on Data Analysis and Working Group on Data Visualization to examine net migration trends and depicting migration patterns in the West African region, which was identified as the initial study area to develop the prototype tool. Exploring the nexus between migration and environmental factors, preliminary results detect a negative association between net-migration and the mean annual rainfall and a positive association between net-migration and precipitation increase.
