Salad King and Ryerson share much more than a postal code. Since first opening its doors as a lunch spot, to its establishment as one of the most popular Thai restaurants in Toronto, Salad King has not only been a welcome neighbour, but has also become a great friend.
Generous awards from owner Alan Liu and his parents Ernest and Linda, have encouraged and empowered international students. Salad King meals and catered events have helped celebrate the diversity and global reach of the Ryerson community. And the restaurant and university have successfully worked together on Toronto’s Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA) to reinvigorate their shared neighborhood, and build a stronger, more vibrant local community.
This year, the Liu family has strengthened the bond between Salad King and Ryerson even further: renewing and doubling the value of five international student awards, and creating the Ernest and Linda Liu Ontario Graduate Scholarship to provide financial support to a promising Ryerson graduate student. At the same time, they have expanded their already generous food and gift-card sponsorships.
The bolstered commitment was announced at Ryerson during the first annual International Mother Language Day Festival, hosted by Salad King and Ryerson’s Cultural Awareness Committee (CAC). The event celebrated the Liu family and showcased Ryerson’s diverse community through aboriginal and Brazilian dances, flags from around the globe, and of course, delicious food provided by Salad King.
“Salad King and Ryerson go back more than 20 years,” said Heather Lane Vetere, Vice Provost Students. “They have donated thousands of meals, supporting the International Community Celebration, Orientation Week, awards for students, and much more. They understand the unique challenges faced by international students, and their generosity provides much-appreciated encouragement and support.”
Alan Liu, managing director of Salad King, said “Ryerson has been a big part of our restaurant’s success, and we are very grateful for the support of both the students and staff. As we mark Salad King’s 25th anniversary, the scholarships and awards are a small way to say thanks for all the community has given us.”
