Ethnic Economies and Residential Contexts: The Case of the Gerrard India Bazaar© 2011

Ethnic economies are an important part of the urban economy. This study examines the Gerrard India Bazaar and how it functions as an ethnic economy in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). Despite past research that suggests a local co-ethnic residential base tends to accompany an ethnic economy, this study found that this is not the case for the Gerrard India Bazaar. However, the South Asian population around the Bazaar is increasing. In addition, this study identifies four major South Asian clusters across the Toronto CMA. Though access to the Bazaar varies amongst these clusters, all represent a potential customer base.
