Hard Spaces: A Geography of Homelessness in Ontario © 2007
Homelessness is the result of both social structure and individual choice. It is a place the unfortunate are relegated to, and a lifestyle that some veer towards. Homelessness presents a challenge to the geographical sciences. Its transient and antistructural characteristics do not lend themselves to spatial studies. Homeless services are taken as a surrogate for homeless people in order to more easily map the homeless landscape. Rates of injury for the homeless population are derived to help describe that landscape. The homeless are found to congregate in low income areas near to the centres oflarge cities. They are also found to be much more likely victims of traumatic injury.
