Cable Television Services in Canada: A look at Market Penetration and Regional Differences in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver © 2006

Traditional analog cable subscription services are declining with increased competition from satellite, digital cable and other television services. This paper examines the cable systems in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver and compares market penetration rates in all three areas. Market penetration rates were calculated for each of the study areas based on data provided by Mediastats, Inc.

This paper also examines the census data within cable coverage areas to determine patterns, similarities and differences between the study areas. Census data is aggregated to the level of the cable boundaries (Mediastats Data) and factor and linkage analysis was performed to determine links. A cluster analysis was performed to determine groupings of cable areas. Some characteristics stood out for each of the clusters created and there was a geographical trend evident in the final cluster solution.
