Internal Awards

On an annual basis, our faculty members — from new researchers to established members of our community — are recognized for their SRC ideas, expertise and contributions. They exemplify the vitality and excellence that define Ryerson University.

University-Wide SRC Awards

Ryerson’s University-Wide SRC Awards are presented annually, and acknowledge the far-reaching and diverse scholarly, research and creative activities undertaken by our faculty at the various stages of their careers. Congratulations go to our 2018-19 recipients.

The Sarwan Sahota Ryerson Distinguished Scholar Award is given annually to one or more Ryerson faculty members to honour their seminal scholarship in their areas of expertise. Their outstanding contributions could be the culmination of many years of applied research, or a single insight, idea or interpretation which has impacted the scope of knowledge in their discipline and beyond. This year, there were two recipients of this award:

Trevor Hart (Psychology) was honoured for his work in HIV prevention and sexual health promotion interventions. His community-engaged research has built capacity for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM), and has had significant impact both scientifically and in the broader community.

Mehrab Mehrvar (Chemical Engineering) was honoured for his internationally recognized research contributions to the field of water and wastewater management, as well as the effects of climate change on water quality and quantity. His most recent collaborations have taken place in the country of Colombia, an area at high risk of floods, droughts and coastal erosion.

The Social Innovation and Action Research Award was presented to Rupa Banerjee (Business Management) for her scholarship in the integration of immigrants and racial minorities into the Canadian labour market and society. The research has significant implications for policy-makers, employers and job seekers, and the immigrant-serving sector.

The Early Research Career Excellence Award was awarded to Shelagh McCartney (Urban and Regional Planning) for her investigations into the housing systems in Indigenous and marginalized communities. Guided by First Nations partners, her community-driven framework seeks to address housing as a top priority for health and wellness.

The Knowledge Mobilization and Engagement Award went to Candice Monson (Psychology) for her innovative, multi-level approach to the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which includes a national implementation trial of frontline clinicians using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based treatment which she co-authored.

The Collaborative Research Award was granted to Josephine Pui-Hing Wong (Nursing) whose research program incorporates a community empowerment and capacity building approach to issues such as migration, HIV and mental health, along with cross-sectoral collaborations between leaders from the faith, media and social justice sectors.
