City of Toronto art installation, Toronto Made features work by New Media students
On the walls of Toronto’s Malting Silos (external link) the city is celebrating its status as a UNESCO (external link) (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Creative City of Media Arts (external link) through the large scale projection art series, Toronto Made. (external link)
Third year New Media student, Ranjit Khela, has their work featured as part of the Illuminating Higher Education (external link) series which “represents the intellectual and artistic heart of the city, four of Toronto’s world-class post-secondary institutions come together to showcase their incredible creative talent.”
When first hearing about this project, I knew I wanted to use a platform this large as a way to share the concepts I consider core to my personal identity. It was quite a short timeline, but by using TouchDesigner and After Effects I was able to create a 5 minute long video piece which explores the concept of rebirth through glitched visuals.

The beautiful thing about New Media is how you’re surrounded by people with such diverse artistic practices, which is especially shown through our faculty members. It allows me to take inspiration from every class I attend, every peer I have a conversation with, and every assignment I’m tasked with. New Media has shown me that my artistic practice will never be locked down to one medium, it will constantly evolve alongside new technologies and new conversations.
