Creative Practice Hours

Creative Practice Hours are dedicated time that a New Media student spends doing something creative or in support of our community.  Students should be attempting to apply what they have learned in class to a real life scenario. As such, creative work can include a variety of activities like fabricating, designing, animating, producing, editing, photography, social media, marketing, writing,  hosting, event planning etc.

Creative Practice Hours are a graduation requirement. 60 hours need to be completed before the end of classes in a student's fourth year.

How many Creative Practice Hours are needed?

Each New Media student must complete a minimum of 60 hours of Creative Practice unpaid volunteer work for a qualifying institution or project.

There are some New Media projects that always count for Creative Practice Hours. They are “pre-registered” in the CPH Portal. That means that part of the administrative paperwork process to track the hours a student completes is already completed in the CPH Portal for you. Projects that are pre-regisitered for CPH include but are not limited to:

  • New Media Events (not limited to Hack Nights, NEXT, etc)
  • New Media/Makerspace Support
  • New Media Year End Show
  • MetRadio 1280 AM
  • New Media Student Union
  • Global Experiential Sport (GXS) Research Lab
  • Graduate Productions
  • MetTV
  • Undergraduate Production Projects (Practicum and beyond)
  • Promotions, Recruitment, and Social Media
  • SPACE Initiatives
  • SpiritLive
  • TMU Bold Broadcast Group
  • TMU Athletics production support volunteer work

Step 1: Before you volunteer, you must either register your project (or fill out some information if your project is pre-registered). Log in to the portal, click "register a new project", and fill out the information required.

This step triggers an email to your project supervisor and asks them to confirm if you are working on a project for them.

Step 2: After you volunteer, you need to indicate that you completed your project for the full amount of hours you indicated in step 1. Log back into the portal, find the project you registered and update the project with the number of hours you completed. Ensure you submit the project.
