Regional Systems
The MEMO project investigates the relationship between internal, intra-regional and intercontinental migration, and, through comparative studies, will identify the differences and similarities of migration drivers and determinants across three regional systems. The following three migration systems were chosen for their population size, complexity, and the variegated nature of their migration flows.
The Four Regional System
Americas
Migration in the Americas is increasingly complex. Bordering the US, Mexico holds a key position as diverse migration flows coexist.
West Africa
West African migration is complex. Across 16 nations, mixed cross-border flows coexist, including refugees, trafficked victims, and economic migrants.
South Asia
South Asian nations see all types of migration: voluntary, forced, or permanent. While mostly source countries, they also act as destinations.
