Film Theory

This course introduces advanced methods of film analysis and film theory discourse. Students track how the field has evolved from reflections of critics, filmmakers, artists, and philosophers to an academic discourse. Students explore film theories and the institutions, discourses, and political and cultural contexts from which they emerged. Topics include post-colonial theory, Indigeneity, psychoanalysis and suture theory, ideology and apparatus theory, post-structuralism, gender and the gaze, race and representation, queer theory and performativity, film philosophy, and digital and post-cinematic theories.
